What's In My 6-Year-Old Dancer's Practice Bag?

Well, it's been a little while since I have written here. Life looks a little different these days, but I am excited to start sharing again.

When my daughter first started dance, I assumed all she needed was her dance shoes and a water bottle.

I was wrong.

After a few years of forgotten hair ties, ripped tights, and hungry meltdowns between classes, we've figured out a few essentials that make dance nights run much smoother.

For context, my daughter is 6 (almost 7), takes multiple dance classes, and participates in our studio's community troupe. She's not training professionally, but she spends enough time at the studio that having a well-stocked dance bag makes life easier for both of us.

Here's what we always keep in her dance bag.

1. A Good Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is non-negotiable.

We actually keep two water bottles in rotation because her school water bottle occasionally gets left behind in her classroom. Having a backup means we're never scrambling before class.

Our current favorite is the Owala bottle. It's easy for her to carry, doesn't leak, and keeps her water cold during long dance nights.

2. Extra Hair Elastics and a Hair Brush
My daughter has thick hair, and dance classes require it to be pulled back securely.

We've learned the hard way that hair elastics break at the worst possible times, so we always keep extras in the bag.

We also keep a small hair brush tucked into one of the side pockets. Whether her ponytail falls out during class or we need a quick touch-up before troupe performances, it's one less thing to remember when we're rushing out the door.

3. Snacks
Dance makes kids hungry.
Because my daughter sometimes has multiple activities in one evening, we always keep a few shelf-stable snacks on hand.

Some favorites include:

  •  Granola bars
  •  Beef sticks
  •  Trail mix
  •  Crackers
  •  Fruit snacks

Nothing fancy, just something that helps keep her fueled and happy between activities.

4. Deodorant Wipes
At 6 years old, my daughter doesn't really need deodorant yet.
But sometimes dance class is hot, kids get sweaty, and they simply want to feel fresh afterward.

Deodorant wipes are great for those moments when she wants a quick cleanup before heading to the next activity or getting into the car after practice.

5. Hand Sanitizer Wipes
Maybe this one is mostly for me.

I love keeping hand sanitizer wipes in the dance bag. Not necessarily because I'm worried about germs, but because kids somehow manage to get sticky, dirty, or messy no matter where they go.

We usually grab the Dollar Tree hand sanitizer wipes. They're compact, affordable, and take up less space than a full pack of baby wipes.

6. Backup Tights
This lesson was learned the hard way.

Last dance season, my daughter managed to put runs in multiple pairs of tights. She dances with her whole heart, and apparently her tights pay the price.

Now I always keep a backup pair tucked into the bag. They don't take up much room, and it's one of those items you'll be grateful to have when you need it.

Final Thoughts

Every dancer is different, and what works for our family might look different for yours. As my daughter gets older, I'm sure this list will change too.

I'd love to hear from other dance parents:

What's one thing you always keep in your child's dance bag that people might not think of? Let me know in the comments!
